Finding Balance in the New Year
Have the holidays left you feeling heavy, sluggish,
fatigued, or moody? The typical overindulgence of the
holiday season, along with shorter days and grey skies
puts many people in this state; feeling badly, knowing
they need to do something about it, but not knowing
what to do, or how to do it.
Low energy, emotional ups and downs, weight gain,
and fatigue are reliable signs that the body has
not been able to keep up with all that it has been
given to process. Our body works very hard to maintain
balance. Eating well and exercising are things we
do to help it maintain appropriate chemical balance.
During the holidays, we might have overindulged
in rich foods and alcohol, and used cofee or other
stimulants to counteract the heavy or groggy feeling,
and eaten lots of sugar just because it's there.
The body's ability to maintain balance has become
overwhelmed. What we need to do is take the burden
off the body to let it recuperate.

Role of Detoxification |
 |
An effective way to accomplish this
revitalization of the body is with a New
Year's cleanse. This is generally a 3-week
dietary program that provides the body with
optimal nourishment, while supporting the
body's own efforts to detoxify through the
bowels, the kidneys and the liver.
The result is a clean break from the
foods and substances that we may have been
using to manipulate our energy and moods
(i.e. sugar, alcohol, and caffeine). This
allows the body to find its own state of
balance which generally includes a steady
and even feeling.

| What
People Say About the 3-Week Cleanse |
 |
| Here,
I share with you the words of people who
have done a three week cleanse under my
supervision.
"From Day One I felt better, both
physically and mentally. To my surprise,
it was actually no problem to sustain the
diet through a week-long trip in the middle
of the cleanse. The weight came off effortlessly,
and the three-week cleanse was so successful
that I decided to stay on the maintenance
diet. I'm happy to report that the Christmas
holidays came and went without any temptations
to stray, and my health was in peak form.
What a wonderful way to start the new year!
I'm so grateful for this reasonable, doable,
and effective program. My thanks to Laura
for her informative guidance and ongoing
support throughout the process."

"The cleansing and detoxification
program enhanced my taste buds - everthing
tasted fabulous! I felt lighter and much
better about myself. I also discovered
that eating this new way was effortless;
I had expected this to be uncomfortable
and difficult. I got a great feeling of
esteem from completing the program. I intend
to continue on a modified form of this
program since it has improved my consciousness
regarding food; what I choose to eat and
how I feel after eating. I would recommend
this program to everyone."

Blues: Motivational Reading |
 |
Sugar
is one of the most difficult substances
to remove from the diet. We know that it
is not good for us, but it tastes great,
it is comforting and soothing in the short
term, and it is extremely convenient and
easy.
A great motivator in changing one's sugar
consumption can be learning specifically
how it affects your health. Also, reading
stories of people who have changed the
state of their health dramatically by eliminating,
or altering their consumption of sugar,
can be inspiring. Sugar Blues by William
Duffy is an easy-to-read account of how
sugar affects your health -- it will definitely
motivate you to change your sugar intake.

| A
Tea to Support Detoxification |
 |
One
of the most important features of a detoxification
or cleansing program is that the liver
and the bowels are supported in their efforts
to rid the body of wastes. This is accomplished
very effectively with herbs such burdock,
dandelion, and yellow dock roots, which are primary ingredients in The Art
of Health's Alterative Tea.

A
New Commitment to Your Health |
|
|
A new year is
commonly thought of as a time to make resolutions
about how we want to conduct ourselves differently
in the year to come. How wonderful! Unfortunately
so many resolutions just don't last for very
long.
Many New Year's resolutions have to do
with health: eating better, exercising more,
or losing weight. In my naturopathic practice
I encourage making changes in the way you
approach your personal health and wellness
that reflect a true commitment to your health
rather than a narrow or short term goal.
In this bulletin, I offer information and
support on the topic of detoxification as
a tool for eliminating our dependency on
addictive substances and creating a healthy
dietary foundation that can be long lasting. |
